Safe use of Roundabouts

Here in Nottingham we have possibly 1 of the worst roundabouts in the country
Nuthall roundabout
Where City, Local and Motorway traffic all merge wanting to go in several different directions I assure you 90% of all motorists using this roundabout are neither in the correct lane for where thay want to go nore actualy Know which is the correct lane prior to them joining for where they want to go. Yet all the information you need is clearly there on either road side signs or on the actual lane using either names or road numbers below are some reasonably simple rules for safe rondabout negotiation
The golden rule to remember is follow the white line never cross it and stay in Lane if you are in the wrong lane go the wrong way and keep everyone including YOU safe
Any other action and you would fail your test on a a Serious or Dangerous Point.

Possibly the safest road junctions are Roundabouts
however the fact that poor lane discipline, poor observations and failing to signal properly is common on many of our roads this converts roundabouts into possibly the most dangerous

The simple rules are.
Prepare early using M.S.P.S.G.L
( mirror, signal. position, speed, gear and look )
Select the correct lane for the direction you are going( read the road signs )
STAY IN LANE if you have entered the wrong lane go the wrong way and keep yourself and others safe
Correct signalling.
Left 1st Exit signal left on aproach to the roundabout and keep it on until you are into the new road
Straight Ahead 2nd exit.
No signal but correct lane prior to roundabout mirrors and signal left at the exit prior to your's
Right 3rd Exit
mspsgl to obtain right hand lane join into inner lane of roundabout and stay there, exit prior to yours mirrors and signal left and then left door mirror to confirm its safe then enter the new road in the left lane.

It can sometimes be difficult to decide wether you are going left , ahead or right with different roundabout layouts a simple rule to adopt is
You are joining at 6 on a clock face anything before 11 is left 11 to 1 is ahead after 1 is a right turn
Recognising your Gap
The first rule is as all road junctions you should not cause anyone to change speed or direction when you emerge into the new road / roundabout
Considering the clock face guide if a car is prior to 20 past you should be able to go but be aware of the other drivers speed
The golden rules for roundabouts are
1, MSPSGL prior so well prepared
2, Correct Lane Postion prior to joining

3, Stay in Lane don't cross a white line
4, If you are not in the correct lane GO THE WRONG WAY and KEEP SAFE.
5 Occasional you will come across roundabouts where you need to use,
" Spiralling "
This is complicated as you will usualy be turning right joining the roundabout from the right hand lane on the aproach road and then having to spiral out to say lane 2 of 3 as you aproach your exit road, Try to get an overhead view on a programme such as google earth so you can see the problem make good use of mirrors and remember if your not sure keep in lane , go the wrong way for the route you planned but keep everyone including yourself safe.
